Today we started out with the intent of going to Hollywood Studios, but when we got there, the line was really long to just pay for parking, so we decided to head on over to Epcot. First stop is always Spaceship Earth. Elijah loves going in the "giant golf ball." I ran over to get some fast passes and on the way back, I noticed that Kim Possible is recruiting agents to save the world. I'm in! We did a mission and it was really fun. I don't think Grandpa enjoyed it as much as Elijah and I did.
We also went in Innoventions and played 'Don't Waste It' and got to sort out all the trash our household uses in a year. They emailed us a certificate and everything. Pretty cool day.
When we got back to the condo, Elijah and Grandpa S went out on the paddle boats while I went out to dinner with friends who live here. When I got back I found out that they were also able to go fishing. Elijah caught one but it broke the line and got away. Maybe next time!

Universal Studios
Today we went to Universal Studios. First thing we took Grandpa S to The Simpson's Ride. They were still building it the last time he was down there. Good times, although when they were showing some of the clips from the show, I was thinking about how much it may be warping my son.
Happy Birthday Bobbie & Nikki!
Happy Birthday to two of my cousins: Bobbie and Nikki. One from each side of the family. I hope you both had a great day! All the best!

Finishing the Drive
We made it to Knoxville and left at about 8:15 on Saturday morning. We made it to Orlando at about 6 p.m. Wasn't too bad overall, but there were some times that felt like it would be an eternity.
Now we are all tired. Unpacked the car and decided to unwind a little. No energy to go out -- too bad because the Mardi Gras party at Universal is probably a blast. Oh well, new day tomorrow.

Travel Day
Today we are heading off to Florida. The plan is to drive to Knoxville and stay the night. We would drive further, but since I made Elijah go to school today, we aren't leaving until after 3 p.m. I don't like to be on the highway late at night. We'll see how it goes. Say a prayer for safe travels!

Cardboard Classic
Today we did our 2nd annual (it is the event's 15th annual) cardboard classic. Grandpa D recycled the sled from last year and made some alterations to it. He and Elijah came in 13th place. Grandpa sat in front this year -- not sure if that worked for the better since they were in 10th place last year. Overall it was a good time and much warmer than the year before. It was also nice to not stress about getting on a flight to Orlando after the event!

B&G Banquet
Tonight we went to the Cub Scout Blue & Gold Banquet. The food was not great, but we had good company. Elijah won a medal of honor for his popcorn sales -- highest in his den. The look on his face was priceless. We also got to see some Webelos earn the Arrow of Light. A very interesting ceremony. Not exactly how I would have expected to spend Valentine's Day, but it will do.

Disappointing
I was online today and read an article about a certain Olympic swimmer admitting to poor judgement. In the past I have found the poor decisions and indiscretions of role models to be unfortunate. Today as a parent I have to say that I'm very disappointed. This is someone that my son has commented on aspiring to be. I only hope I can keep this information from him.

The First Month of 09
Well, the first month of 2009 is coming to a close. It went fast. Then again, this month always seems to go fast. It has been a busy month, but no nearly as busy as previous years. I've seen some big changes with my company, my mom amd stepfather are still laid off, and my father is preparing for retirement. His company is closing its doors June 30. If this is any indication of how the year is going to go, we are in for a rough ride.

Congratulations Robert!
Today Elijah and I went to a Christening. It was for my best friend's grandson. Now that REALLY sounds wierd! He was so handsome in a white tuxedo. I was Robert's Godmother. He wasn't really excited about the baptism. A little water got on me and it cold (like everything in Michigan these days). After we dried him off, he was okay and even said "thank you" when the deacon put some oils on him.
I now have three Godchildren -- 2 boys and a girl. I pray that I can be a good influence on him.
Congratulations Robert Eli Lorenzo!

Congratulations Jenny & Matt!
Today I was at Gary's niece's baby shower. Doesn't that sound wierd? It does to me considering she was a little girl when I first met her. Now she's going to be a momma. It was a nice luncheon and it was good to see everyone. Jenny & Matt are driving back to Florida on Monday, so please say a prayer for them that they return home safely. By the way, if you didn't know, she's having a girl: Olivia Kaye.

Cheers to You
Today was a little sad in the office. It was the last day for three people. None were from my department, but it was still sad. After work we went out for a few cocktails and a "mild" roast of a couple of the folks. Overall, I know if five people who have had their jobs eliminated. Again, it hasn't hit my department . . . yet. Of the five, three were able to get other jobs within the company (or with one of our franchise companies). It's pretty scary and I hope it turns around fast. All the best to all of you. I raise my glass to you.

Sasha . . . Update
Well, we thought we were making great strides. We switched Sasha to a grount turkey and rice diet and she started taking an anti-inflamatory. However, yesterday we felt something on her side and today she does not seem like she is feeling well. I just we knew for sure what was wrong with her, but with dogs you are stuck dropping $1-2K for tests to find out. I'm so bummed.

Happy Birthday to my uncle Kenny. I didn't get to speak with you on the phone, but I hope you had a great day. He had a nice party last weekend while he was in town. We didn't get to make it, but I spoke with him and it seemed like he was having a good time. Love ya . . . fool! ;-)

As the year comes to a close
I reflect on what has transpired over the last year. Birthdays were celebrated, some loved ones passed on, and the end of year proved to be turbulent. Hopefully 2009 will bring back jobs for loved ones and things won't seem so unsettling. In 2009 we will be welcoming a new baby into Gary's family. There will also be changes at work. My former priest said years ago that 'fear is worshiping a false God.' He said that if 'you truly believe, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.' Great words, hard to follow. This coming year will test me in many ways. I hope I can keep those words in perspective.

Sasha
Over the last few months one of our dogs has been sick off an on. Nothing consistent, other than what seems to be some stomach discomfort. Last Friday she went back to the vet and it appeared on an x-ray that she has a mass or something in/around her colon. Today we took her to a specialist that did an ultrasound. The vet said that if she were much older, she would think that it is cancer for sure. But, since she's 3.5 years old, it does not make sense. We are trying a few medication options to rule out some other possibilities. If they don't work, then we have to consider her having a colonoscopy. Not only is it costly, but it sounds like a horrible stressful experience for a dog (think enema -- lots of them).
If it ends up being cancer, they said she would have maybe 6 months. Please pray it's not cancer. I don't know if I can handle losing another dog to cancer.

The budget
Today Elijah and I hit the store to use up his gift cards. I told him how much he had to spend. It was fun to see him look around and select items based on how much he had to spend. A few times he said 'that's too expensive.' He ended up going slightly over budget, but I think overall it was a good lesson for him.

Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you. This year was a little different than other years, but all in all it still held to what the season is supposed to be about. We were able to see almost all of our family members. We made the rounds over the last two days. Still a few phone calls to make.
Remember he is the reason for the season.

It's been seven years since Gary left us. Although it does not hurt as often, the pain is still there. When I feel it, it's as bad as the first day without him. I still miss him.

Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for not being in the hospital. The meds are helping a lot. Yesterday was a pretty good day in that I did not have that horrible pain I had the two days before. Although today, I feel that it is wanting to come back. Maybe it is because I can actually eat something again. I hope I continue to make progress, although I still have spots popping out. Guess I'll be missing Black Friday.

It's official
I have the chicken pox. It started out as a little annoying and not too bad, but then turned into something awful. They were in my mouth and apparently traveled from there. After a night of excruciating pain that near put me on the edge, I went to the doctor. Some of the staff were not very pleasant and yes, I was treated like a leper. I can't say I blame them -- I would not wish this on anyone, however keep in mind that I would want to give this to anyone and I would not step foot outside my door if I didn't feel it was necessary. My doctor is out of town, so I met with another doctor. You know it's bad when a doctor that doesn't know you, shakes his head and genuinely looks like he feels so bad for you. Bad news -- I haven't peaked yet (What!?!). How can it get worse? Will I be spending my Thanksgiving in a hospital?
Sunday, November 23, 2008
And so it begins
It appears that I am coming down with the chicken pox. Just a few for now, but they are coming. Have to wait and see what tomorrow holds.

Chicken Pox!?!
Elijah has chicken pox. Yes, he had the vaccine years ago. I have no idea where he got them from. Fortunately it has been a mild case -- about 10-15 pox, no fever and good spirits. However, he has had to miss school since he's contagious. I hate him missing school, but what can you do? HOMEWORK!
Oh, did I mention that I never had the chicken pox. Cross your fingers that I don't get them!

Happy Birthday Aunts!
Happy birthday to one of my aunts. As a small child for some reason when she tried to teach me her name, all I would say is: "Aunts." Over the years, it has become a term of endearment. We miss you Aunts and heard you are in town this weekend. Maybe we'll see you. Love you!

Happy Halloween
Happy Halloween! Elijah is very excited today and could barely contain that energy. The economy seems to have had an effect on the festivities unfortunately, but he still had a good time.
On another note, we could use some prayers again. Bad family news came through today. Thanks.

Update
My uncle came through surgery very well. He had blockage in both legs. They said one was critical, but they put a stent in it. He has to stay overnight at the hospital, but I am told he is doing well. Thanks for your prayers.

Prayer Request
I have a request for a couple of prayers . . .
The first one is for my uncle. He is having a surgical proceedure tomorrow morning. It is suppposted to be outpatient, but the are going in to remove some blockage in an artery. If you would please keep him in your thoughts and prayers, i would appreciate it.
The second one is for a student at Elijah's school. She's the sister of one of his classmates. She had surgery last week and there have been some complications. Please keep her in your prayers.
Thank you.

What a great weekend
This weekend was pretty full. We had some visitors on Friday and Saturday: cousins! It was a great time and Elijah had a blast. Saturday he took a swim test for his Cub Scout belt loop. He ended up also testing for his swimming/sports pin. The test included learning about water safety, sitting in the lifeguard chair and using the lifeguard equipment to "save" his instructor. Another proud moment and another realization that my guy is growing up fast. Too many emotions at once!

Winding Down
Our last full day in Orlando was spent shopping, relaxing, and hanging out at the condo. We decided to forgo a trip to one of the parks and deal with the blistering heat.
My mom's new hobby is quilting, so we found a quilting store outside of downtown Orlando. It was an interesting trip, but a fun experience. We also made the trip to Downtown Disney and hit the big store. Before leaving the grounds, Elijah and Grandpa stopped for Disney temporary tattoos. The evening closed with a nice dinner and round of mini-golf.

Hollywood Disney Style
Today we went to Disney's Hollywood Studios (formerly known as Disney/MGM). It was hot again -- another 96 degree day. We visited the new Toy Story ride and it was very cool. The rest of the day was spent going on the usual rides and a stop at the 50's Prime Time Cafe. No elbows on the table and you can earn a sticker if you clean your plate!

More heat
Today we went to Islands of Adventure. It was another smoking hot day. We spent some time in Seuss Landing. The Lost Continent is pretty tore up since they started building the Harry Potter Ride. We wrapped up with a trip on Popeye's & Bluto's Barges. That ride leaves you soaked from head to toe. Needless to say that even though it was still smoking hot, we came back to the condo soggy.
After a nice shower and a change of clothes it was off to have dinner with a couple of friends. All in all a good day, but hot!

Feeling Hot Hot Way Too Hot
Today was a scorching 96 degrees. We started out the day at Animal Kingdom, but ended up back by 3:30 pm. It was HOT! The rest of the day was spent hanging out at the condo.
I was also able to secure our 2009 trip. Yahoo! That time of year is nice and not too hot.

Shop til you Drop
Today we ended up outlet shopping. A few pairs of shoes, and a few more purchases later (did I mention that there is a Coach store there?). Anyway, we came back in time for one of those quick FL showers and then off to dinner. Not a typical day in Orlando, but it was a good day. Especially having time to recover from all the sun the day before.

Blizzard Beach
We went to Blizzard Beach to try out a Disney Waterpark. Elijah went down the Summit Plummet -- the largest free fall water slide. He's a bit of a dare devil. It was a good day and the weather held out. Although at the end of the day I discovered the places where the sun screen was missed.
I also got "bit" by the chair lift (a chair lift takes you to the top where three rides are). A quick trip to first aid made it better. Today I'm sporting a nice bruise. Despite my injury, it was a good day and a great waterpark. Thumbs up!

Reporting Live from Orlando
We came to Orlando today. Nice and toasty hot. All week I was wondering at "Fay" and what it would be like down here. Last night positive news came that it was away from the central Florida area. Although on the plan today the pilot came over the intercom to tell us that "Fay" was to the right of the plane. Looked like a lot of clouds to me. Plus there was the wing of plane obstructing the view.
After checking in and grabbing lunch, we headed off to Universal Studios. First stop: The Simpsons Ride. (formerly known as Back to the Future Ride). It was pretty cool. I would rate it higher than it's predecessor. After that a few more rides and here comes the rain again. Good thing we had those ponchos! We wrapped up our visit to the park with an awesome dinner at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Highly recommended.

Robbie Update
Robbie had a growth removed and it needed to be biopsied. The good news is that the growth was benign. Although he wants to keep licking his foot, so I've had to put the "cone" on his head. He makes a great tulip! Sounds like after some tests and this biopsy that Robbie just may be getting a little senile. Poor old man! ;-)

Kalahari part deux
We went to Kalahari for the second time. Another great adventure where good times were had by all. This is also something I highly recommend. Relatively short drive from this side of town, 160,000+ square feet of indoor water park. The outside park was open as well (big difference from December). Check it out!

Kid Rock rocks!

Robbie
Robbie hasn't been himself lately, so I took him to the vet. His hearing is just about gone -- he doesn't hear much these days, and now it looks like he might have Cushings Disease. There's some testing involved, so we'll see how it goes. If he has it, I have some decisions to make that I'm not looking forward to. Please say a prayer for him.

Orange Belt
Elijah belt tested today and now has an Orange Belt! It is amazing to watch how far he has come. I'm so proud of him!

Fishy
Poor Fishy left us today. He had a nice porcelin bowl funeral. Elijah took it much better than I thought. We had him 3 1/2 years -- not too bad. The internet said most live 2 years.

In Loving Memory
I found out that Gary's Uncle Ray passed away on June 12. He was not ill, so his passing was quick. He had been married to Gary's Aunt Delores for 62 years. There's a memorial service tonight. I did not know him well, but he was always very kind. Peace be with you.

School's Out
One school year is done! Elijah is very excited to be on Summer break. It's hard to believe how fast that year went by!

Why?
I was speaking with a dear friend who was telling about some family issues. Without hashing out all the details, a relative posted some very mean and hateful comments about my friend on one of these networking websites. Why would someone do that? I wouldn't do that to a total stranger, let alone a member of family. No matter how much I may get mad or irriated with my family, I would never dream of bringing other people into it. I would not make false accusations or wish them ill will. I just don't get it. It makes me sad. I guess I'm down this week. "Fishy", Father Jack, this. I need a laugh.

Conflicted
So I found out today that Father Jack is being moved to another parish. Mind you I haven't been to St Mary's in quite awhile (we changed parishes because of Elijah's school). I guess it is bothering more than I thought it would. I have always adored him and how he puts things in perspective. I think of all those appointments with him while Gary and I were doing our marriage preparation. He and Gary clicked and anyone that knows Gary, knows that he was not exactly on the pro-catholic circuit. After we were married, it was Gary that was asking if we were going to church. It was Father Jack that turned Gary around. This man was the officiant at one of the happiest days of my life and the saddest. He baptized my son. Now he's going to another parish, where I don't think I will see him again. I pray that our paths will cross again.

Sorry for the Silence
I guess I haven't had much on my mind because I've been struggling over what to write lately. Looks like "Fishy" may not be with us much longer. I'm not sure how to let Elijah know. Sometimes he overthinks things, so I think I'll wait until it happens, otherwise he may keep visiting the fishbowl wondering when and worrying about it. Crazy how I'm worried about how he will take a fish dying.
